Supporting Strategic ICT Planning Process of UNESCWA

Dr. Tomasz Janowski, UNU-IIST Senior Research Fellows and Head of the Center for Electronic Governance attended a meeting of the Consultative Committee on Scientific and Technological Development and Technological Innovation of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA). The meeting took place in Beirut, Lebanon from 3 to 4 April 2012.

The meeting reviewed UNESCWA's achievements in ICT during the biennium 2010-2011, its work programme for 2012-2013, and its emerging strategic framework for 2014-2015. The meeting was attended by about 15 experts from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, including vice-ministers, directors of government departments and former UN staff, and all members of the UNESCWA's ICTD division. The meeting was conducted in Arabic with simultaneous translation between Arabic and English.
 
During the meeting, Tomasz Janowski presented on Policy-Driven Electronic Governance. He also attended a meeting with all members of the ICTD division to discuss three lines of collaboration with UNU: 1) scientific advice and contribution to curriculum development for the UNESCWA's AIGLE project - Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders in the ESCWA Region; 2) organizing a series of Government Chief Information Officer trainings in the region towards obtaining an official GCIO certificate; and 3) internal capacity building and fellowship opportunities for UNESCWA staff.
